    Description

    This is a photographic album of the Cramer family of Dahlem Germany at the turn of the century in Germany and subsequent photos of family before and during the rise of Hitler and their escape to the United States. The people in the photos are Charlotte Cramer Sachs, her brother Fritz Henry Cramer and Hans Cramer. Hans established the H.S. Cramer Co. in Berlin, a grain importer/exporter. They were a wealthy family who travelled all over Europe. Some photos are of their big Berlin House. They lost the business and family possessions to Nazis. They left Germany for England in 1933 and then to New York in 1934.
    They had success with H.S. Cramer & Co. and the H.S.C. Trading Co. Charlotte started Cramer Products Co. Fritz went on to teach history at Mt. Holyoke College.
    There are a total of 43 photos, most mounted in the album, but several loose with identifying information on the backs. Over half the photos are from 1903-1905, the rest from the 30's and 40's. Several are of family travelling in various countries, 4 of S. Hadley. Charlotte Cramer Sachs was an artist, inventor, entrepreneur, food and wine enthusiast and an early developer of prepared cake and muffin mixes. Her company, Cramer Products Company pioneered the manufacture and distribution of many types of prepared food mixes under the brand Joy Prepared Mixes. She also held six patents.
